SUMMARY:Con Cariño Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Guadalupe Hernandez is a Texas-based artist who earned his MFA from Houston Baptist University in 2021. Hernandez was born in San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico\, before relocating to Pleasanton\, TX\, a small city south of San Antonio\, in 1998. Despite the move to the United States\, Hernandez maintained a deep connection to his Mexican heritage and customs through time-honored familial traditions. \nThis exhibit pays homage to his parents who left their homeland in search of a brighter future for their family. The accompanying pieces in this collection weave together fragments of their journey and the various forms of labor they undertook to provide their children with the opportunities they were denied. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCon Cariño translates to\n“with love” or\n“with care”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nCentral to Hernandez’s practice is the use of chisels and punches\, which wield a dual significance in this body of work. The physicality of using the chisel—he believes—mirrors the repetitive and labor-intensive endeavors of his parents. The level of skill\, precision\, and care required to produce these delicate designs serve as a visual representation of his love and admiration for the sacrifices his parents made.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA few of Hernandez’s most recent accomplishments include the Nest Heritage Craft Prize for his efforts to preserve and push forward the Mexican folk art tradition of Papel Picado and being a visiting artist for the Art Students League of Denver. He was also notably among six pairs of visual artists in the 2022 US Latinx Art Forum Mentorship Program\, supporting an intergenerational skill exchange. He has also participated in artist residencies with institutions such as the Asia Society Texas Center and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCon Cariño will be on display at the Ellen Noël Art Museum from August 23rd\, 2024 – December 1st\, 2024.  \nThe Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from noon until 5pm\, extended hours on Thursdays until 8pm. \nAdmission is always free.

SUMMARY:Vizyon Art by Young Visionaries - Haitian Children's Art Show - Exhibit Opens
DESCRIPTION:Artistic expression is inherently shaped by cultural influences and personal experiences within a given society.  Haiti is no exception to this rule.  In response to this cultural dynamic\, the nonprofit organization\, New Vision Art School\, located in Port-au-Prince\, Haiti was established to address a community need.  It serves as a safe haven for children\, offering them the opportunity to enjoy workshops\, channel their creativity\, embark on educational journeys to museums and other art-related institutions\, and fosters a supportive community where parents can connect and receive assistance. \nThis pop-up exhibition showcases the artistic creations by children who have benefitted from the nonprofit organization\, New Vision Art School\, located in Port-au-Prince\, Haiti. The artwork by these children reflects their cultural beliefs\, traditions\, and customs. \nPlease join us for a reception one week after opening\, on February 8th\, 2024\, at 6PM! \non loan from the Hatcher-Levinger Family collection.

DESCRIPTION:Adventures in Art\nAges 6 – 12 \nAdventures in Art is an exhibition-driven class for children ages 6 – 12. We begin with a gallery walk of a related exhibition in the museum and finish with a studio art experience that changes with each class. This 1 hour class is held once a month from October – May. DESCRIPTION:Gastronomy\nStudio Art Quilt Associates\nOpens December 7\, 2023\, 12:00 PM – March 10\, 2024 5:00 PM\nThe Ellen Noël Art Museum hosts its current exhibition on loan from the Studio Art Quilt Associates\, entitled “Gastronomy.” This collection is on view with free admission from December 7\, 2023 – March 10\, 2024. Please join us for MUSEUM UNCORKED: A NIGHT OF ART & WINE in conjunction with this exhibit on March 8\, 2024. \nGastronomy is the study of the relationship between food and culture\, featuring not only the bountiful gifts from nature\, but a gift from the human hand. The art of preparing unique\, delicate food is a tradition passed from generation to generation around the world. It combines innovative ingredients\, colors\, textures\, and flavors to create dishes that are pleasing to both the palate and the eye. This exhibition is the blend of the art of cooking and the artistry of quilting. Gastronomy showcases over 30 quilts created by members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates\, Inc. (SAQA) and juried by sisters and curators\, Cecilia and Merce Gonzalez Desedamasis. \nThis is the first time that the Ellen Noël Art Museum has hosted an exhibition by SAQA. They are a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.” Their vision is that the art quilt is universally respected as a fine art medium. Over the past 30 years\, SAQA has grown into a dynamic and active community of over 4\,000 artists\, curators\, collectors\, and art professionals located around the world.
