SUMMARY:40 Years 40 Artists: An Anniversary Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the Museum’s 40th anniversary\, we are excited to announce this exhibition as a tribute to our collection. Throughout the past four decades\, we have diligently collected and preserved a diverse collection of artworks that encapsulates the cultural and historical significance of our region and the broader artistic community. Our collecting mission has been rooted in the belief that collecting art is not merely a task; it is a responsibility we hold for future generations. By ensuring that these works of art\, along with the narratives they convey\, remain accessible\, we are fostering a lasting connection between our community and the artistic expressions that define it. \nThis exhibition will not only showcase 40 exceptional artists but also feature a timeline that highlights significant events from the Museum’s history over the last 40 years. These artworks will spark memories of past shows\, programs\, and events\, allowing visitors to reflect on our history. \nWe invite you to explore these artistic contributions that resonate with our identity and inspire ongoing dialogue about our community’s journey. Join us in celebrating our past\, present\, and future as we honor the artists and stories that shape our collective experience. \nThis exhibition features old favorites\, never-before-seen artworks\, and recent acquisitions\, all from the Museum’s vault.

SUMMARY:The Leaf Connection
DESCRIPTION:DATES: Now through Aug. 24\nTIMES: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.\nPRICE: Included with Membership or General Admission.\nThe Leaf Connection showcases the vibrant plant diversity of the Phoenix metro area through an intricate display of hand-made\, ceramic leaves at Webster Center. With more than 1\,000 ceramic pieces\, each leaf’s design is influenced by observations community scientists record on iNaturalist\, an established online platform where nature lovers share information on biodiversity. \nDuring the course of the exhibit\, local artist Mary Meyer will periodically add new ceramic leaves as more people contribute observations on iNaturalist. The Garden invites guests to engage with this distinctive art installation\, offering a captivating opportunity to reconnect with nature. \nExhibition unavailable during private events. \nMary Meyer is a sculptor and mixed media artist whose work utilizes systems of carved components that investigate the intimate connections between community and botanicals. Originally trained in stone carving\, she is drawn to meditative processes and materials such as clay\, wood and metal that foster the intuitive exploration of form. Meyer has lived in Arizona for more than 28 years. She holds a BFA in sculpture from Arizona State University where she studied foundry casting methods and metalworking. She completed her graduate studies at the University of Arizona\, where she received the MFA Fellowship for her work with large mixed media installations. The artist has exhibited at the Phoenix Art Museum; Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum; Tucson Museum of Art; and FOMA Gallery Santa Fe\, among others. SUMMARY:Ray Wylie Hubbard
DESCRIPTION:Pre-sale tickets available! All tickets on sale Friday\, Feb 21st at noon! \nWhen F. Scott Fitzgerald issued his classic conclusion that ‘There are no second acts in American lives\,’ he failed to envision the career of legendary Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard. A willing conspirator in the late seventies Cosmic Cowboy revolt that ushered in the mythical Outlaw era\, Hubbard was a catalyst in the cultural upheaval that led to the peaceful coexistence of Lone Star music enthusiasts who comprised each end of the social and political spectrum of that troubled time. In the stellar company of iconic colleagues like Willie Nelson\, Waylon Jennings\, Doug Sahm and Jerry Jeff Walker\, Ray Wylie Hubbard was an architect of the musical legacy that continues to inspire subsequent generations of up-and-coming Texas talent. \nYes\, Hubbard is a Texas singer-songwriter\, complete with the classic trifurcated handle\, fundamental chapter of the canon in his song catalog (“Redneck Mother”)\, and enough wild hairs in his past to qualify him as a legend. But along the way\, his attention began to leave matters extraneous to his art and soul by the wayside and focus on the beauty and potential to be found in the blank canvas of\, in his case\, the yet to be written and recorded song. The result has been one of the most satisfying musical and lyrical journeys to witness over the last two decades. In the years that followed he evolved into a writer of uncommonly honest portraits of life\, alternately mixing deep personal sagas with poignant character studies of those traveling on the dark side of the road. \nIf one wanted to describe the sound of Ray Wylie Hubbard\, one could call it American music\, born from the time-honored traditions of folk\, country\, and roots rock.

SUMMARY:Object of the Month: Madonna and Child
DESCRIPTION:Object of the Month \nFree for Members | Included with general admission for the general public \nReserve your spot at the Visitor Services desk.  \nJoin Museum Docents for an in-depth exploration of a single work of art. These 30-minute\, interactive gallery talks spark connections and conversation about the featured object’s history\, meaning\, and relationship to other works in the collection. \nGiovanni Francesco Barbieri\, Madonna and Child \nThis May\, as we honor the mothers in our lives\, join Master Docent Sherry Koopot for an exploration of Baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri’s Madonna and Child. In Christian art\, Mary has long been depicted as the devoted mother of the infant Jesus. However\, in today’s context\, she represents far more-embodying maternal compassion\, motherhood\, and the strength of femininity.

SUMMARY:Create Playdate
DESCRIPTION:Create Playdate \nWant to make art inspired by your favorite Phoenix Art Museum works on view? Create Playdate offers young artists a hands-on maker experience during their visit through our mobile\, in-gallery art cart. Each week’s Create Playdate offers a fresh and fun theme featuring an artwork on view\, an art making activity to do at the Museum\, and kids’ projects to extend the fun at home! \nCreate Playdate is included in general admission and no registration is required. Drop in any Saturday between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. \nMay 2025 \nSaturday\, May 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\, 31 | 11 AM – 3 PM \nInspired by the annual migration of monarch butterflies from Canada to Mexico\, Carlos Amorales conceived Black Cloud as a “swarm” of moths that take over museum spaces\, rising to envelop the viewer. Made up of 25\,000 black paper moths and butterflies of 30 different species\, the installation forms a surreal\, yet sublime gathering of insects delicately poised in sculptural formations. Visitors will create their own black paper moth and butterfly covered artwork. \nPrograms take place onsite in the galleries at Phoenix Art Museum. Create Playdate is free for members and included in general admission for the general public. \nCreate Playdate is made possible by First Things First\, The Discount Tire Endowment for Children’s Art Programs\, and the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fund for Education Programs.
