You wouldn’t be wrong. Ten records in six years is some kind of prolific. The latest\, a double LP\, suggests the artist has some songs worth paying attention to. It’s clear that he’s invested as much time in the studio\, recording storytelling songs\, and making storytelling videos\, as he has barnstorming around the United States and Europe playing live shows. \nNot bad for a thirty-seven-year-old late bloomer. \nCharley Crockett has been a fairly remarkable artist to follow. He’s got a sound. He’s got something to say. He has a look. And there’s a gauzy veil of mystery surrounding him suggesting he knows more than he’s letting on. \nAll those records in such a short amount of time have come with a “No Two Alike” guarantee\, particularly the last three releases: the darkly prescient Welcome to Hard Times; the semi-autobiographical\, hard-core country-roots of The Valley; and 10 for Slim\, his tribute of songs by the obscure and wholly authentic Texas honky-tonk maestro James Hand.

DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://events.eventgroove.com/event/Literary-Death-Match-58448 \nLiterary Death Match\, co-created by Adrian Todd Zuniga\, marries the literary and performative aspects of Def Poetry Jam\, rapier-witted quips of American Idol’s judging (without any meanness)\, and the ridiculousness and hilarity ofDouble Dare. \nEach episode of this competitive\, humor-centric reading series features a thrilling mix of four famous and emerging authors (all representing a literary publication\, press or concern — online\, in print or live) who perform their most electric writing in seven minutes or less before a lively audience and a panel of three all-star judges. After each pair of readings\, the judges — focused on literary merit\, performance and intangibles — take turns spouting hilarious\, off-the-wall commentary about each story\, then select their favorite to advance to the finals. \nThe two finalists then compete in the Literary Death Match finale\, which trades in the show’s literary sensibility for an absurd and comical climax to determine who takes home the Literary Death Match crown. \nIt may sound like a circus — and that’s half the point. Literary Death Match is passionate about inspecting new and innovative ways to present text off the page\, and the most fascinating part about the LDM is how seriously attentive the audience is during each reading. We’ve called this the great literary ruse: an audacious and inviting title\, a harebrained finale\, but in-between the judging creates a relationship with the viewer as a judge themselves. \nOur ultimate goal is to perform the Literary Death Match all over the world\, and to continue to showcase literature as a brilliant\, unstoppable medium.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrated artist Heidi Pitre returns to Odessa with her exhibit of library card art. “A Permanent Record\,” repurposes vintage library cards into unique artworks that celebrate the written word. Pitre’s work will be exhibited at the Ector County Library from September 6 – November 19\, 2023. A special reception will be held for Pitre as well as new library Director Howard Marks on September 16th at 5:30pm on the first floor of the Ector County Library. Pitre will also hold a library card art workshop on Saturday\, September 17th at 2pm at the Ector County Library. The reception and the workshop are free and open to the public.
