This engaging program allows young creatives to explore their artistic talents through a combination of exhibition tours and hands-on studio projects. Classes are held from 2:30-4:30 PM\, providing a perfect afternoon activity for budding artists. \nIn our upcoming session\, students will have the unique opportunity to tour the current exhibition featuring Guadalupe Hernandez’s stunning large-scale displays of papel picado. These intricate and colorful cut paper artworks will serve as the inspiration for the day’s studio project. Participants will learn the traditional techniques of making their own papel picado\, allowing them to connect with this beautiful and historic art form in a meaningful way. \nThe cost for each class is $20\, with advance\, online registration required by noon Thursday\, October 3rd. Due to limited class size\, we encourage you to sign up soon to secure a spot for your young artist. SUMMARY:Con Cariño Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Guadalupe Hernandez is a Texas-based artist who earned his MFA from Houston Baptist University in 2021. Hernandez was born in San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico\, before relocating to Pleasanton\, TX\, a small city south of San Antonio\, in 1998. Despite the move to the United States\, Hernandez maintained a deep connection to his Mexican heritage and customs through time-honored familial traditions. \nThis exhibit pays homage to his parents who left their homeland in search of a brighter future for their family. The accompanying pieces in this collection weave together fragments of their journey and the various forms of labor they undertook to provide their children with the opportunities they were denied. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCon Cariño translates to\n“with love” or\n“with care”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nCentral to Hernandez’s practice is the use of chisels and punches\, which wield a dual significance in this body of work. The physicality of using the chisel—he believes—mirrors the repetitive and labor-intensive endeavors of his parents. The level of skill\, precision\, and care required to produce these delicate designs serve as a visual representation of his love and admiration for the sacrifices his parents made.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA few of Hernandez’s most recent accomplishments include the Nest Heritage Craft Prize for his efforts to preserve and push forward the Mexican folk art tradition of Papel Picado and being a visiting artist for the Art Students League of Denver. He was also notably among six pairs of visual artists in the 2022 US Latinx Art Forum Mentorship Program\, supporting an intergenerational skill exchange. He has also participated in artist residencies with institutions such as the Asia Society Texas Center and Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCon Cariño will be on display at the Ellen Noël Art Museum from August 23rd\, 2024 – December 1st\, 2024.  \nThe Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from noon until 5pm\, extended hours on Thursdays until 8pm. \nAdmission is always free.

DESCRIPTION:Artistic expression is inherently shaped by cultural influences and personal experiences within a given society.  Haiti is no exception to this rule.  In response to this cultural dynamic\, the nonprofit organization\, New Vision Art School\, located in Port-au-Prince\, Haiti was established to address a community need.  It serves as a safe haven for children\, offering them the opportunity to enjoy workshops\, channel their creativity\, embark on educational journeys to museums and other art-related institutions\, and fosters a supportive community where parents can connect and receive assistance. \nThis pop-up exhibition showcases the artistic creations by children who have benefitted from the nonprofit organization\, New Vision Art School\, located in Port-au-Prince\, Haiti. The artwork by these children reflects their cultural beliefs\, traditions\, and customs. \nPlease join us for a reception one week after opening\, on February 8th\, 2024\, at 6PM! \non loan from the Hatcher-Levinger Family collection.

DESCRIPTION:Adventures in Art\nAges 6 – 12 \nAdventures in Art is an exhibition-driven class for children ages 6 – 12. We begin with a gallery walk of a related exhibition in the museum and finish with a studio art experience that changes with each class. This 1 hour class is held once a month from October – May.
